On Feb. 28, Don Sundene was awarded the Henry F. Wind Award for Outstanding Leadership in the field of Specialized Pastoral Ministry (SPM) by the LCMS Board of National Mission. He was flown as a special guest to the International Center in St. Louis where the award was presented during the banquet for the SPM portion of the LCMS’ Making Disciples for Life Conference.
Sundene has been in leadership with Lutheran Ministry Services Northwest since 1985. He has been Executive Director of LMSN since 2015. He was honored, specifically, for his work in coordinating prison ministry in the LCMS. That has entailed working with the 35 districts of the Synod to recruit district level prison ministry coordinators and to serve as a resource for those requesting care. Sundene also led a team that developed a ministry plan for LCMS prison ministry and gathered a wealth of resources for those who are interested in such outreach. Those resources have been made available through the LCMS’ website.
His granddaughter, Audrey (Sundene) Heinz, was able to travel from Chicago to the International Center in St. Louis to help Don celebrate.
